small Swiss colonies in Vevay, Ohio (1809) and Highland, Illinois (1836).
In 1844 immigration to the US was encouraged by the Swiss government. A settlement was purchased
in 1849 by Canton Glarus, thus named New Glarus in Wisconsin.
Other Swiss colonies in US included Berne, Minnesota, Tell City, Indiana, Grutli, Tennesse,
Helvetia, West Virginia, New Switzerland, Georgia, Ruttli, Nebraska and Bernstadt, Kentucky.
